Can't Adjust the Brightness in Windows 11? Slider Missing, Greyed Out, or Dimming on Its Own — Fixed

The slider vanished, it's greyed out, it won't budge, or your screen dims itself when the picture changes. Nine times out of ten it's a display driver, a power mode, or an auto-brightness feature — not a failing screen. Here's the order to check.

You go to turn your screen up (or down) and the control isn't there — the brightness slider is missing from the quick settings panel, or it's visible but greyed out and won't move, or you drag it and nothing on screen changes. Or the opposite: the brightness keeps changing on its own, dimming when you open a dark window and brightening again, and you never touched it. It's a small thing that turns into a real irritation, especially if your screen is stuck too dark to work comfortably.

The good news is that this is almost always software, not a dying display. In most cases it comes down to one of four things: a display driver that's outdated or got swapped for a generic one, a power or battery-saver setting holding the brightness down, an auto-brightness feature quietly adjusting the screen, or — if you're on a desktop — the simple fact that Windows can't control an external monitor's brightness the way it controls a laptop's. This guide walks through them in the order that solves it fastest. First: are you on a desktop with an external monitor?

This trips up more people than any driver bug, so rule it out before you change a single setting. Windows' built-in brightness slider only controls displays that are physically part of the computer — a laptop screen, a tablet, or an all-in-one. If you have a desktop tower with a separate monitor plugged in, Windows normally shows no brightness slider at all, because that monitor has its own brightness control built into the screen. That isn't a fault; it's how external monitors work.

To change an external monitor's brightness, use the buttons on the monitor itself — usually a small row of buttons or a little joystick on the bottom edge or the back — to open its on-screen menu (the OSD) and find the brightness setting there. If you want to skip reaching around the back every time, there's a genuinely useful free tool: Twinkle Tray, available from the Microsoft Store, adds a brightness slider for external monitors to your system tray. It works by talking to the monitor over a standard channel called DDC/CI, so your monitor has to support that (most do) and it may need to be switched on in the monitor's own menu first. That's a free, trusted utility — you don't need any paid "brightness fixer" download, and we'd steer you away from those.

Where the brightness controls actually live

If you're on a laptop, tablet, or all-in-one and the slider still seems missing, make sure you're looking in the right place, because there are two spots. The quick one is the Quick Settings panel: click the cluster of icons at the far right of the taskbar (the Wi-Fi, sound, and battery icons together), or press Windows key + A, and the brightness slider sits right at the top. The other place is Settings > System > Display, where you expand the Brightness section — that's also where the automatic-brightness options hide, which matter later in this guide.

If the slider is genuinely absent from both of those on a laptop, that points to a driver problem, which is the next section. If it's present but frozen or greyed out, or you can move it but the screen doesn't respond, that's usually a driver or a power setting — both covered below.

The number-one fix: your display driver

A missing or dead brightness slider on a laptop is, more often than not, the display driver. The driver is the go-between for Windows and your screen, and when it's outdated, corrupted, or has quietly been replaced by Windows' fallback "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter," Windows loses the ability to control the backlight and the slider disappears or stops working. The tell-tale sign is that everything looks a little lower-resolution than usual and brightness is one of the things that broke — that combination usually means the generic driver took over.

To fix it, right-click the Start button and open Device Manager, then expand Display adapters. Right-click your graphics device (Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA) and choose Update driver > Search automatically. If that reports it's already up to date but brightness is still broken, do a clean reinstall instead: right-click the device, choose Uninstall device, restart the computer, and Windows will reinstall the driver automatically on the way back up. For the most reliable result, especially on a laptop, grab the latest display driver directly from your laptop maker's support page (Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, and so on) using your exact model number — the maker's version often includes the brightness controls that a generic download leaves out.

While you're in Device Manager, expand the Monitors section too. If you see "Generic PnP Monitor" with a small down-arrow on it, it's been disabled — right-click and choose Enable device. If it's already enabled but brightness is still stuck, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, and restart; Windows rebuilds it automatically and this alone restores the slider on a surprising number of machines.

If the slider is greyed out or won't move

When the slider is there but greyed out or refuses to budge, a couple of Windows services and settings are the usual cause. First, check the Display Enhancement Service, which handles adaptive brightness and related features: press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Scroll to Display Enhancement Service, and if it's stopped, double-click it and press Start (or Stop then Start to restart it). Then re-test the slider.

Second, power settings can pin your brightness down. If Battery saver is on, Windows deliberately lowers the screen and can lock manual control until you plug in — go to Settings > System > Power & battery and turn Battery saver off (or set it not to reduce brightness). While you're there, a very aggressive "Best power efficiency" power mode can hold the screen dim as well; nudge it toward Balanced and see if the slider comes back to life.

The screen dims and brightens on its own

If your problem is the reverse — the brightness changes by itself and you can't keep it where you set it — that's almost always one of two automatic features, and both are easy to switch off. The first is adaptive brightness, which uses a light sensor to match the screen to the room; walk from a bright window to a dim corner and the screen follows. Turn it off under Settings > System > Display > Brightness by unchecking "Change brightness automatically when lighting changes" (it only appears on devices that have the sensor).

The second is sneakier and catches a lot of newer laptops: Content Adaptive Brightness Control, or CABC. Instead of reacting to the room, it dims and brightens based on what's on the screen — a mostly-black window makes it drop the backlight, a bright white page makes it climb — all to save battery, and it can look like the screen "breathing" or dimming for no reason. Turn it off in the same place: Settings > System > Display > Brightness, then set "Change brightness based on content" to Off (some laptops let you leave it On battery only). Between those two switches, a screen that wouldn't hold still usually settles right down.

One related note: if the Night light toggle is also greyed out at the same time as your brightness trouble, that's another symptom of the same display-driver problem from the section above — fixing the driver typically brings both back.

The brightness keys on the keyboard do nothing

A separate flavor of this problem is when the on-screen slider works fine but the brightness keys on your keyboard — usually the sun icons on the F-keys or the arrow keys — do nothing. Start with the simplest cause: many laptops have an "Fn lock," and if it's on, the F-keys act as plain function keys instead of their printed shortcuts. Look for an Fn Lock key (sometimes it's Fn + Esc), toggle it, and try again. You can also just hold the Fn key down while you press the brightness key to test whether that's the issue.

If that's not it, the brightness keys usually rely on your laptop maker's own hotkey software — for example HP's "HP Hotkey Support," and similar utilities from Dell, Lenovo, and ASUS. If that software was never installed, got removed, or is out of date, the special keys stop working even though the display itself is fine. Install or update your laptop's hotkey/function-key utility (and its keyboard and chipset drivers) from the maker's support page for your model. In the meantime, the on-screen slider in Quick Settings does exactly the same job, so you're never stuck.

When it's actually the hardware

Software fixes cover the large majority of these cases, but occasionally the backlight itself is failing. The classic test: if the screen is very dark even at maximum brightness, shine a flashlight at an angle across it in a dim room — if you can faintly make out the desktop, the display and its picture are fine but the backlight has failed, which is a repair rather than a settings tweak. On a desktop monitor, if none of the OSD buttons change anything, check whether the monitor's menu is locked (some monitors have a button-lock you hold to toggle) before assuming it's broken.

The honest rule of thumb: if the slider and settings behave normally but the panel simply won't get bright, that's a hardware conversation. If the slider is missing, greyed, or ignored, or the screen dims itself, it's one of the software fixes above and it's free.
