Printer Says "Driver Is Unavailable"? What Windows Changed in 2026, and What Actually Fixes It

The error is about availability, not corruption — and what is available changed underneath everybody this year. How to work out which side of the line your printer is on.

You open Settings to print something and, under the printer's name, Windows has put a short grey line where it used to say Ready: Driver is unavailable. Nothing prints. The printer itself looks perfectly healthy — it has power, it has Wi-Fi, its own screen says it is fine, and it will happily print a test page from its own control panel.

Search that message and you will get the same six steps on every site: restart the PC, run the troubleshooter, update the driver in Device Manager, remove and re-add the printer, download from the manufacturer, reset the firewall. They are not bad steps. But they were all written for a version of Windows that no longer exists, and a large share of the people hitting this error in 2026 are hitting it because the print system underneath them changed this year — twice, on published dates, on purpose.

This is the piece nobody puts in the fix list, and it decides which of those six steps has any chance of working for you.

What the message actually means (and what it doesn't)

"Driver is unavailable" is a statement about availability, not about damage. Windows is telling you it does not currently have usable software for talking to that particular printer — either it never found one, or the one it had is now missing, mismatched, or refusing to load.

That is worth separating from the faults that look similar, because they get fixed in completely different places. A job that disappears with no error at all is usually a stuck queue, an "Offline" switch or the wrong default printer. A "Print Spooler service is not running" message is a service crash, and normally a leftover driver is crashing it. A printer that prints from your phone but not the PC is a network-path problem, not a driver problem at all. We have separate guides for each of those, and if your symptom is one of them, go there instead — reinstalling drivers will not fix any of the three.

"Driver is unavailable" is specifically the supply problem: the software Windows wants does not exist on this machine. So the whole question becomes where it is supposed to come from — and that is exactly what Microsoft has been changing.

The five minutes to spend before anything else

Some of these errors really are trivial, and it is worth clearing the trivial ones before you go reading release notes.

Restart both. Power the printer off at the switch, wait ten seconds, power it back on, and restart the computer — not shut down and start again, but Restart, which on Windows 11 is the only one of the two that fully reloads everything. If the printer is on USB, unplug the cable and put it in a different port directly on the computer rather than through a hub or a dock, and if you have a spare cable, use it: a marginal USB cable produces this exact error surprisingly often.

Then look at how many printers are actually listed. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. If you see three entries for the same machine — the model name, the model name with "Copy 1" or a number after it, and something ending in "WSD" — the one you are printing to may not be the one that works. Remove every entry for that printer, restart the PC, and add it back once, cleanly. This alone resolves a good number of cases, and it costs nothing.

If it is still unavailable after that, it is a real one, and the rest of this article is about why.

What changed underneath you in 2026

For twenty-odd years, the answer to "where does the driver come from" was Windows Update. You plugged a printer in, Windows went and fetched the manufacturer's driver, and it worked. That arrangement is being retired on a published schedule, and 2026 is the year the schedule started to bite.

Microsoft announced the plan in September 2023 — an end of servicing for the legacy v3 and v4 third-party Windows printer drivers, staged over several years because, in its own words, it is an impactful change. Three dates matter. On January 15, 2026, no new printer drivers are published to Windows Update for Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025; existing ones can still be updated there, but only approved case by case. On July 1, 2026 — about six weeks before this was written — the driver ranking order was modified to always prefer Windows' own built-in IPP class driver. And on July 1, 2027, except for security-related fixes, third-party printer driver updates will no longer be allowed through Windows Update at all.

Read the middle one again, because it is the one people are feeling right now. It does not say Windows stopped supporting manufacturer drivers. It says that when Windows has a choice, it now picks its own. So the machine that used to quietly install an HP or Epson or Brother driver the moment you plugged the printer in has, since the start of July, been choosing differently — and on a printer that Windows' own driver cannot handle, and for which there is no longer a driver waiting on Windows Update, "Driver is unavailable" is the honest thing for it to say.

Two things this explicitly does not mean, both straight from Microsoft's own FAQ, because the internet has got them wrong in both directions. Manufacturer drivers can still be installed — Windows continues to allow vendor-supplied printer drivers to be installed from the maker's own installation package, and drivers already released can still be installed even after end of servicing. And there are no plans to disable print features related to the legacy driver platform. Nothing is being bricked. What has gone away is the automatic delivery, which is precisely the thing every "just let Windows find it" instruction depends on.

The thing Windows wants to use instead

The replacement is driverless printing, and Microsoft now calls it Windows Ready Print. It is the same idea your phone has used for years: rather than each printer shipping its own software, printers and computers speak a common standard — IPP, the Internet Printing Protocol, for printing, eSCL for scanning, plus Universal Print for cloud-managed office fleets.

It is not new or experimental. Windows has shipped inbox support for Mopria-compliant printers over both network and USB since Windows 10 21H2, through what was called the Microsoft IPP Class Driver. Mopria is the industry alliance — printer makers and software vendors — that defines those standards and certifies devices against them. Microsoft's figure is that most new printers and over 120 million printers already sold are Mopria certified. There is a very good chance the printer sitting in front of you is on that list and has been for years without anybody mentioning it.

When it works, this is genuinely better: nothing to install, nothing to keep updated, no driver to be broken by next month's Windows update, and it works the same on an ARM laptop as on an Intel one. The manufacturer-specific extras — the tidy control panel, the ink levels, the scan button, the specialised media settings — move out of the driver and into a Print Support App delivered through the Microsoft Store, installed automatically when it exists for your model.

Where it does not work is on printers that were never built to speak that language. And that is the fork in the road.

Find out which side of the line your printer is on

Before you download anything, spend two minutes answering one question: is this printer Mopria certified? Everything downstream depends on the answer, and guessing wastes an afternoon.

There are two ways to check. Mopria publishes its certified product list at mopria.org/certified-products — search your exact model number, not the family name, because a product line often contains both certified and uncertified models. And on a current Windows 11 machine, look at the printer's entry in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners: Windows marks compatible printers with a small shield icon.

A rough guide while you look it up: an ordinary home or office printer bought since the mid-2010s, network or USB, is very likely on the list. A thermal label printer, a receipt printer at a shop counter, a wide-format or specialist device, or an old USB-only inkjet from before that era is much less likely — those devices often speak their own proprietary language rather than the standard document formats the certification is built on. Several makers of exactly that kind of hardware have published their own customer notices about this change, which tells you who is feeling it.

If it is certified: stop fighting Windows and let it use its own driver

This is now the path of least resistance, and it is more reliable than what it replaced. Remove every entry for the printer in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, restart the computer, make sure the printer is on the same network as the PC — the same network, not the guest one — and add it again.

If Windows does not find it by itself, add it by hand rather than hunting for software. In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, choose Add device, wait for the search to fail, then take the "Add manually" option and choose to add a printer using an IP address or hostname. Get the address from the printer's own screen — nearly every network printer will print its own configuration or network settings page from its front panel — and let Windows autodetect the type. This connects it directly over IPP, without any manufacturer software involved at all.

One habit worth breaking while you are here: on a Mopria-certified printer, do not go and install the manufacturer's giant driver-and-utilities bundle out of reflex. It is now the more fragile of the two options, and it is the thing that will be unsupported first. Install the maker's app only if you actively need what it adds.

If it is not certified: go to the maker, and go carefully

Then you need a real driver, and there is exactly one dependable place to get it — the manufacturer's own support site, for your exact model number, downloaded as their full installation package. Not a driver-updater tool, not a third-party driver library, and no longer Windows Update, which is the whole point of everything above.

Microsoft's own compatibility guidance is worth following to the letter here, because this is where people create a second problem on top of the first. Match the driver to your Windows version and to your system type — a driver written for an older or unsupported version of Windows should be a last resort, used only when there is genuinely nothing newer, and an ARM-based laptop is a different animal again. Uninstall whatever is currently there before installing the new one, and restart between the two.

The hard case is honest to say out loud: some printers have no Windows 11 driver and are never going to get one, because the manufacturer stopped writing them years ago. If the model is discontinued and its support page offers nothing past Windows 8 or 10, the printer is not broken, but it has reached the end of its usable life on a modern PC. That is a much better thing to find out in ten minutes than after a week of reinstalling.

The setting that deletes drivers, and why nobody warned you

There is one more possibility, and it accounts for the most baffling version of this problem: you install the correct driver, it appears to work, and then it is simply gone — or Windows refuses to install it at all, with no useful explanation.

That is Windows protected print mode. It is a security feature, introduced in Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025, that restricts the machine to driverless printing only. Microsoft's description of what happens when you enable it is unambiguous: printers that use third-party drivers are uninstalled, the driver is deleted from the print driver store, and it cannot be used while the mode is active. New third-party driver installations are blocked for as long as it is on. It also removes unsupported software printers — XPS, Windows Fax and Scan, and the classic OneNote (Desktop) printer, which is replaced by a protected version.

To see where you stand, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and scroll down to Printer preferences. Under Windows protected print mode you will see either Set up, meaning it is off, or Turn off, meaning it is on. If it is on and you need an uncertified printer, turning it off is the fix — but with one catch that catches everybody, and printer manufacturers have published notices about it: turning the mode back off does not restore the driver it deleted. You have to reinstall the driver yourself afterwards, and re-add the printer.

And if this is a work computer, check before you go looking for the switch. When the mode is enabled by group policy, you cannot disable it — that is by design, and it is your IT administrator's decision, not a bug. On a machine like that, the answer is a Mopria-certified printer or a conversation with whoever manages the policy.

Scanning is a separate question, and it has its own catch

If your machine is an all-in-one, do not assume that solving the printing half solves the scanning half. They travel over different protocols and they fail independently, which is why a printer can print perfectly and refuse to scan on the same day.

On the driverless path, a network multifunction device does its printing over IPP and its scanning over eSCL or WS-Scan. Over USB it is stricter: those endpoints are only available when the USB interface is in IPP-over-USB mode, with eSCL for the scan side. And Microsoft flags a specific gap in protected print mode — some otherwise compatible devices' scanners are not available in that mode, so if scanning matters to you, check the scanner against the Mopria certified list too, not just the printer.

Practically, that means if you scan every day for work, the scanning half deserves to be part of the decision rather than an afterthought. If printing is fine and it is only scanning that has stopped, that is its own distinct fault with its own causes, and we have written it up separately.

If it broke the day an update installed

When printing worked on Tuesday and stopped on Wednesday with an update in between, there is one step worth trying before any of the above: roll the driver back. Open Device Manager, find the printer under Printers or Print queues, open its properties, go to the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the button is available. That puts back the version that was working and buys you time to sort out the replacement properly.

Also clear the wreckage of old drivers while you are in there, because a stack of leftovers from printers you no longer own is a genuine cause of the next problem. Remove old and duplicate printer entries in Settings, and if a driver keeps reappearing or the spooler starts falling over, that is a different article — the spooler crashing within seconds of starting is nearly always a bad driver still installed, and it needs stripping out at the print-server level rather than the printer level.

What this means if you are buying a printer

The direction of travel is now clear enough to shop by, and it is a rare case where the standards-based answer is also the cheap and easy one.

Check the model against the Mopria certified list before you buy. A certified printer will set itself up on any Windows 11 machine, any Mac, any phone, and any ARM laptop, with nothing to install and nothing to maintain, and it will keep doing that after July 2027 when the driver route narrows again. An uncertified one commits you to a manufacturer driver for the life of the machine, on a platform that is being wound down on a published timetable.

For a small business the same check has teeth, because the specialist devices are the exposed ones. If your front counter runs on a receipt printer or your shipping desk on a thermal label printer, find out now whether those devices are certified, and do not turn on protected print mode on the computer they are attached to until you know. That is a five-minute check that prevents a very bad Monday morning.

When it's worth handing it over

A lot of this is genuinely doable at the kitchen table: check the certified list, remove the old entries, add the printer back over IPP, and either it prints or you now know exactly why it can't.

Where people lose a weekend is in the middle ground — a driver that installs and then vanishes, a machine with protected print mode on and nobody able to say who turned it on, an office where one PC prints and three don't, a discontinued printer that somebody needs a straight answer about, or an all-in-one where printing came back and scanning didn't. Those are diagnosis problems rather than installation problems, and they are the ones worth ten minutes of somebody who has already seen them.
