Phone Battery Draining Fast? Here's How to Find What's Actually Killing It (iPhone & Android)

Battery falling off a cliff? Before you chase a dozen "fixes," two things settle it fast: did it start right after an update (often normal, and temporary), and what does the Battery screen say is actually using the charge? Here's how to read it — and when it's the battery itself — for iPhone and Android.

It's a horrible feeling: you check your phone at lunch and it's already at 40%, you barely touched it, and by mid-afternoon you're hunting for a charger. A battery that suddenly drains far faster than it did last week feels like the phone is dying. Sometimes it is the battery — but a lot of the time it's one misbehaving app, one setting, or simply the after-effect of a software update that sorts itself out in a few days. The trick is to find out which, in a couple of minutes, instead of blindly trying every "save your battery" tip on the internet and never knowing what actually changed.

Here we'll focus on the drain itself: how to tell a normal, temporary dip from a real fault, how to read the one screen that names the culprit, which settings quietly cost you the most, and how to know when the battery itself is simply worn out and worth replacing. First: did this start right after a software update?

This is the single most common reason a battery suddenly drains fast, and the one the panic-driven articles never mention — so check it first. If your battery life dropped right after an iOS or Android update, that is usually normal and temporary. Apple says it plainly: after an update, "certain tasks related to the update continue in the background," and the advice is to wait a few days and check again — "when the activity finishes, battery life will return to normal." Behind the scenes the phone is re-indexing your photos and files for search, rebuilding the Spotlight/search database, downloading new assets, and updating apps, all at once. That work is real and it costs power, but it ends.

A useful rule of thumb: the first 24 hours after a big update are the worst, days two and three improve as the background work finishes, and by day four or five you should be back to normal (or better). So if your drain started within the last couple of days of updating, the best "fix" is genuinely to leave it on a charger overnight and give it 48–72 hours before you change anything. If it's still draining hard after that window, then it's worth treating as a real problem and moving on to the steps below.

One modern wrinkle worth knowing: a visually heavier interface can draw a little more power day to day. iOS 26's translucent "Liquid Glass" look is the current example — all that real-time transparency and animation leans on the graphics chip, and some users see slightly worse battery life and a warmer phone after moving to it. If that's you and you'd rather have the battery life than the effects, turning on Reduce Transparency (Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce Transparency) and Reduce Motion (Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion) cuts that graphics load and can claw some runtime back. It's a trade-off, not a bug fix — but it's a real lever the generic tip-lists skip.

The one screen that tells you what's actually draining it

Stop guessing and let the phone tell you. Both iPhone and Android keep a per-app breakdown of exactly what has been using your battery, and reading it is the fastest way to find a runaway app. On an iPhone, open Settings > Battery. You'll see the apps that used the most power listed at the top, and you can look at the last 24 hours or the last several days. The key thing to understand is the label "Background Activity" under an app: it means the app burned battery while you weren't even using it — running, syncing, or tracking location in the background. Tap "Show Activity" (or "Show Detailed Usage") and you can see how many minutes each app spent on-screen versus in the background. An app you barely opened sitting near the top of the list, with lots of background time, is your prime suspect.

On Android it's the same idea: Settings > Battery (on Samsung Galaxy phones it's Settings > Battery and device care > Battery), where you'll find usage by app and, on Samsung, an "Optimize now" button that flags apps using too much in the background. What you're hunting for on either platform is the odd one out — a social, messaging, navigation, or email app you didn't use much that's nonetheless near the top. That's the app to deal with first, and it turns a vague "my battery's bad" into a specific, fixable cause. (If instead the top of the list is just the screen itself, that's normal — the display is almost always the biggest single user; skip to the settings section below.)

What to do about the app that's eating it

Once the Battery screen has named a suspect, work through the cheap fixes in order. Force-close the app and restart the phone — a stuck or crashed app can pin the processor in the background until it's cleared, and a reboot fixes a surprising share of sudden-drain cases on its own. Then update the app and the operating system, because a battery-hungry app is very often a known bug that the developer has already patched. If the drain started right after you installed or updated one particular app, that app is the obvious culprit — roll it back, or remove it and see if the drain stops.

If you want to leave the app installed but stop it draining in the background, you can cut its background access. On iPhone, turn off Background App Refresh for the offender (Settings > General > Background App Refresh) and set its location to "While Using" instead of "Always" (Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services). On Android, use the app's battery setting to restrict background use (Settings > Apps > the app > Battery > Restricted, or on Samsung, Battery > Background usage limits / Deep sleeping apps). Leaving Adaptive Battery on (Android) and not force-quitting every app constantly (the phone manages this better than you can) does more good than harm over a day.

The settings that quietly drain a phone the most

If no single app stands out, the drain is usually spread across a handful of always-on settings — and a few of them cost far more than people realise. The screen is the biggest one: high brightness, and an Always-On Display that keeps the screen lit, are top drainers. Turn on auto/adaptive brightness, drop the manual level, set a shorter screen timeout (15–30 seconds), and consider turning Always-On Display off if your phone has it.

The other quiet killer is signal. A phone in a weak-coverage area runs its radios at full power constantly hunting for a signal, which drains the battery hard and makes it warm — this is why battery can be terrible in a building or dead zone where the bars are low. 5G can make this worse in marginal coverage; switching to "LTE/5G Auto" rather than forcing 5G, or turning on Wi-Fi calling where you have Wi-Fi, helps a lot. Two more worth checking: push email and aggressive sync (set email to fetch on a schedule rather than "Push" if you don't need instant mail), and location — apps set to use your location "Always" are a steady background drain, so review Location Services and dial the greedy ones back to "While Using." None of these is dramatic on its own, but together they're often the whole difference.

When it's the battery itself — age and health

Every phone battery wears out. Lithium batteries hold less and less charge as they age, typically over a few hundred full charge cycles — so a phone that's two or three years old and suddenly can't last the day may simply have a tired battery, and no setting will bring it back. The good news is you can check this directly. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and look at Maximum Capacity: it's the percentage of the original capacity the battery can still hold. Apple considers a battery worth replacing once that drops to around 80% or below, and many phones that "won't hold a charge" are simply down in the 70s. On a Samsung Galaxy, you can run a battery health check in the Samsung Members app (Support > Phone diagnostics > Battery); other Android phones vary, but a battery that needs charging twice a day after years of use tells the same story.

A few tells point clearly at the battery rather than software: the percentage drops in big sudden jumps (say 40% straight to 20%), the phone shuts off while there's still charge left or dies quickly in cold weather, or it gets hot and drains together even when idle. The one you must not ignore is a swelling battery — if the screen or back panel is lifting or bulging, or the phone no longer sits flat, stop using it, don't charge it, and bring it in. A swollen lithium battery is a genuine fire risk and needs careful, professional replacement, not a wait-and-see. For an otherwise-good phone, a battery replacement is a quick, affordable repair that makes it feel new again — often the single best money you can spend to get another year or two out of it.
