5GHz Wi-Fi Won't Show Up? How to Fix It When You Can Only See 2.4GHz

The slower network shows up fine, but the fast 5GHz one is nowhere in the list — or it appears and won't connect. Before you blame the router, here's how to find out whether the missing band is your device, your router, or a single setting on either.

You know your router has a 5GHz network — it's faster, it's what you want for video calls and streaming — but when you go to join Wi-Fi, only the 2.4GHz one shows up. Or the 5GHz name appears and then refuses to connect while 2.4GHz works every time. It's a genuinely confusing situation, because everything looks like it should work: other devices in the house may be on 5GHz right now, and yet this one laptop, phone, or tablet acts like the band doesn't exist.

The good news is that "5GHz won't show up" almost always comes down to one of a short list of causes, and most of them are free to fix. The first job is figuring out which side the problem is on — your device, or your router — because the fix is completely different depending on the answer. We'll start with the single question that settles it, then work through the device-side and router-side causes in order. And to be clear up front: no "Wi-Fi booster" or "5GHz enabler" app can add a band your hardware doesn't have, so skip those.

First, narrow it down: is it your device or your router?

Check whether any other device in your home can see and join the 5GHz network — a newer phone is the easiest test. If your phone happily connects to the 5GHz name but your laptop can't even see it, the router is broadcasting 5GHz fine and the problem is on the laptop; jump to the device-side sections below. If nothing in the house can see the 5GHz band — not the phone, not the smart TV, nothing — then the router either isn't broadcasting it or is broadcasting it in a way clients reject, and the router-side sections are where you'll find the fix.

One more distinction worth drawing, because it changes which of our guides you want. This article is about the 5GHz band being missing or unjoinable. Here, we're specifically chasing the case where 2.4GHz works and 5GHz doesn't show.

The big one: does your device even have a 5GHz radio?

This is the cause people miss most often, and it's worth ruling out before you touch a single router setting. Plenty of laptops, tablets, and especially cheaper or older phones have a single-band Wi-Fi adapter that only speaks 2.4GHz. To such a device, a 5GHz network is simply invisible — it isn't hidden or misconfigured, the hardware physically cannot see it. If this is the case, no setting anywhere will make 5GHz appear, and the honest answer is a USB Wi-Fi adapter or an internal card upgrade (both of which we can do).

On Windows there's a definitive one-line check. Right-click the Start button, open Terminal or Command Prompt, type netsh wlan show drivers and press Enter, then find the line "Radio types supported." If that line lists 802.11a, 802.11ac, or 802.11ax, your adapter can do 5GHz. If you only see 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n, it's a 2.4GHz-only adapter and that's the end of the story. A quicker (but less certain) hint: open Device Manager, expand "Network adapters," and read your Wi-Fi adapter's name — one that says "AC," "AX," "Wi-Fi 5," "Wi-Fi 6," or "Dual Band" is almost always 5GHz-capable, while a plain "802.11n" name with none of those often is not. When in doubt, look up the exact adapter model online; the spec sheet will say single-band or dual-band.

On a Mac or a phone

Macs are the easy case: essentially every Mac made in the last decade is dual-band, so a 5GHz network not showing up on a Mac is almost never the Mac's hardware — it's a router-side cause from the sections below, or you're simply out of 5GHz range. To confirm which band a Mac is on, hold the Option key and click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar; it will show the channel and radio type (a channel above 36 with "ac" or "ax" means you're on 5GHz).

Phones are more mixed. Flagship phones are all dual-band, but budget and older handsets — and a lot of tablets, e-readers, and smart-home gadgets — are 2.4GHz-only, exactly like the single-band laptops above. If a cheap phone or tablet never shows the 5GHz name while your newer phone does, that device is simply 2.4GHz-only and there's nothing to fix; put it on the 2.4GHz network and move on. On any phone, if the network was visible before and vanished, "forget" the Wi-Fi network and rejoin to force a fresh scan.

5GHz doesn't travel as far — you might just be out of range

Before assuming anything is broken, walk over to the router. The two bands are not equal at distance: 2.4GHz reaches farther and pushes through walls and floors much better, while 5GHz is faster but short-range and easily blocked by a couple of walls. It's completely normal for a device across the house to see only the 2.4GHz network and for the 5GHz name to reappear the moment you're in the same room as the router.

So test it up close. If 5GHz shows up right next to the router but disappears in the back bedroom, nothing is wrong with your device or your settings — you simply don't have 5GHz coverage that far out. That's a coverage problem, and the fix is either moving the router to a more central, open spot or adding a mesh node to carry 5GHz into the dead zone. Your router may not be broadcasting 5GHz (or it's hidden under one name)

If no device in the house can see 5GHz, log into your router's settings (through its app, or by typing its address — often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 — into a browser) and check two things. First, make sure the 5GHz radio is actually turned on. Some routers ship with it disabled, and a firmware update or a factory reset can switch it back off; look under the Wireless or Wi-Fi section for a 5GHz band toggle and enable it.

Second — and this trips up a lot of people — many modern routers and mesh systems broadcast both bands under a single network name and use "band steering" (sometimes called Smart Connect) to decide which band each device gets. When that's on, you won't see a separate 5GHz name at all; the router hands it out invisibly, and sometimes it just never steers a given device onto 5GHz. The cleanest fix is to split the bands into two separate network names — for example "MyWiFi" and "MyWiFi-5G," same password — so you can pick the 5GHz one by hand. Most router apps have an option to do this, or to turn off band steering / Smart Connect, which then exposes the two bands separately.

The sneaky router cause: a DFS channel your device won't touch

Here's one that even tech-savvy people get stumped by. The 5GHz band is split into channels, and a big chunk of them — channels 52 through 144, known as DFS channels — are shared with weather and military radar. A router using one of those has to constantly listen for radar and, by the rules, move off the channel if it hears any. The side effect: many client devices are cautious about DFS channels and simply won't display or join a network broadcasting on one, even though the network is working fine for other gear. The result looks exactly like "5GHz won't show up" on the fussy device.

The fix is to pin the router's 5GHz radio to a non-DFS channel. In the router's wireless settings, find the 5GHz channel option (it's usually set to "Auto," which is how it wandered onto a DFS channel in the first place) and set it manually to 36, 40, 44, or 48 — these four are the non-DFS channels every 5GHz device supports. Save and let the router restart. This one change resolves a surprising number of "one device can't see 5GHz" cases, especially with streaming sticks, printers, and older laptops.

Region and channel-width settings that hide channels

Two more router settings can make 5GHz channels vanish. The first is the router's country or region setting. Wi-Fi channels are regulated differently around the world, so a router set to the wrong country may broadcast on channels your device — set for the United States — isn't allowed to use, and therefore won't show. Make sure the router's region is set correctly for where you actually are; a mismatch here is common on routers bought secondhand or online from another market.

The second is channel width. Newer routers default the 5GHz band to a wide 80MHz (or even 160MHz) channel for speed, but a wide channel needs several narrower channels stacked together and free, and regulations plus interference can leave that impossible — so the band quietly drops off or won't hold. If 5GHz appears and disappears or refuses to connect, try setting the 5GHz channel width down to 40MHz (or 20MHz) in the router settings and retest. You give up a little peak speed, but you trade it for a band that actually shows up and stays put.

On Windows: check the adapter's own band settings

If your Windows adapter definitely supports 5GHz (you confirmed it with the netsh check above) but the band still won't appear or connect, the adapter itself may be told to avoid it. Right-click the Start button, open Device Manager, expand "Network adapters," right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, choose Properties, and open the "Advanced" tab. Look for a property called "Preferred Band" — if it's set to "Prefer 2.4GHz band," change it to "Prefer 5GHz band" or "No Preference." Also look for a "Wireless Mode" or "802.11" mode property; if your adapter has one and it's been narrowed to a 2.4GHz-only set (like "802.11b/g"), set it back to the mode that includes everything (the default, usually the one listing a/ac/ax). Not every adapter exposes these, so don't worry if one is missing.

While you're there, an out-of-date or corrupted Wi-Fi driver can also make a capable adapter blind to 5GHz. The reliable way to update it is from your laptop maker's support page (search the model plus "Wi-Fi driver") or the chip maker's site — Intel, Realtek, Qualcomm, and Broadcom all publish current drivers — rather than a "driver updater" tool, which you don't need and shouldn't install. Reboot after updating and check whether the 5GHz network appears.
